 Intercollegiate Mediation 2018-2019
Ken Frank, VP of Education, US
The past year has been an active one for the undergraduate
mediation tournament competitions. During the fall, there were
successful invitational tournaments at the College of Holy Cross in
Massachusetts, Brenau University in Georgia and Maharishi University of Management in Iowa leading up to the International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament at Drake University in November. The IIMT was a very successful tournament, featuring training from several distinguished mediation experts prior to the event. There were 28 teams from all over the United States and other countries that participated and teams from the College of Holy Cross and Principia College earned the right to go to Athens, Greece and participate in the International Law School Tournament in March of 2019. In addition, students from Brenau University were able to go to Kiev, Ukraine and compete in Mediate’18, a training and mediation tournament held there in November. In short, intercollegiate mediation is becoming more and more international in scope.
In April of 2019, the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, held its inaugural tournament. The tournament was the first effort to have a mediation tournament in the spring semester at the undergraduate level in several years. Although the initial response was a small tournament, it included teams from across the U.S. as well as a new law school team who was involved in our tournaments for the first time. Dr. Vivian Lord at UNCC was a most gracious host and the tournament will hopefully continue and grow in the years to come.
Perhaps the most exciting news from this past year is the location of the 2019 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament. On the 20th anniversary of this tournament, it will be held at Osgoode Hall School of Law of York University in Toronto, Canada on November 1-3, 2019. By having the tournament outside of the U.S. for the first time, the IIMT is truly living up to its promise of an international tournament. Please make plans to attend the tournament as we need participants, trainers and judges from among our ranks to make this tournament a success. Our host in Toronto has promised us there will be wonderful activities for us to attend in addition to the quality training and competitive tournament opportunities. As an undergraduate tournament committee, we are very excited to offer this opportunity to our college and university partners as well as to members of the INADR community. Contact any member of the executive committee for additional information. We hope to see you in Toronto!
